Set in San Fransisco, Charmed is the story of three young women, on their fight to stop all demonic evil.
Many transistions have taken place from whence the show first began. Changes of actors, characters and storylines, have interfered within the show and brought among many advantages and disadvantages.
Episode One, entitled, "Something Wicca This Way Comes", creates the beginning of many more wicca things to come. Prue and Piper Halliwell are sisters living in the same house, in San Fransisco. The older sister, Prue, works at an auction house named "Bucklands", while her younger sibling Piper is a chef at the local restaurant. Both enjoying their current freedom, they both forget all this when their younger sister, Phoebe moves into the manor. With a rebel streak running through her, Phoebe is extremely too irresponsible for Prue's liking. Prue is very agitated when realising that her younger sister had been asked to move back in, with the offer made by Piper.
Known to be a person full of curiosity, Phoebe wondered what was in their attic. On her first night back, she decided to fulfil her curiosity and enter the attic. During her look around she spotted a book called "The Book of Shadows". She opened the book, read the first page, which appeared to come out as a spell and from then on, they were transformed into three of the most recognised witches today, being referred to as "The Charmed Ones".
With their duty to protect all innocents, they were given powers in order to succeed with this duty. Prue had been given the power to move things with her mind, which was called "Telekinesis". Piper was given the power to freeze things and Phoebe, the youngest, received the power to see into the future, which was called receiving a "Premonition". As the years progressed, so did their powers, and with each day their powers became stronger. Prue was then given the power of "Astral Projection", meaning that she could move from one place to another, using two bodies. Phoebe eventually made the myth come true that indeed, witches could fly. Piper too, received another power, and that was to blow things up, purely with her set of hands.
Within only a little amount of time, they learnt that their "handyman", was indeed a white lighter, sent to protect them. Named Leo, he told the trio that he was an immortal who heals witches and who had the ability to orb, meaning the ability to travel with only his body. Due to him being their whitelighter, they were his "charges". Eventually his closeness to Piper lead to more than just a "magical friendship" that they later wed and became a married couple.
Many years after receiving their powers, the day came when there was ONE demon which they could not fight. Shacks. After mistakenly revealing themselves to the public as witches, Piper was shot by a witch who was at first, on their side, but after being pushed away by Prue's magic, she fought back. Prue, feeling very helpless and angry, asked to turn back time. However, her plan backfired and later this decision lead to her death.
Phoebe, who had now become very close to Prue, felt sad internally, but kept her pain hidden to keep herself at ease. Piper, on the other hand, was not ready to give up. She made many spells, went through their book but nothing could bring her beloved older sister back. When all hope was lost, the day of Prue's funeral came, and such an amazing thing happened. Paige Matthews, an adopted young women, had been told that her mother's maiden name was Halliwell. That day she read in a newspaper that a woman named Prue Halliwell had died. Anxious and curious to know whether this could possibly be her sister, she made her way to the funeral and sent her condolensces to both the sisters. When simply asked how she knew Prue, she replied that she was simply a friend.
While Piper and Phoebe were busy coming to terms with what had happened to Prue, Leo received his latest charge. Coincidentally, this was the same woman who had attended Prue's funeral. After learning that she was able to orb, all were confused as to how a witch could have this sort of power. There minds were partially put to rest when their late mother, Patty, revealed that this so-called woman, was indeed her daughter. The one who she had given birth to when she had been having an affair with her whitelighter, Sam. She knew that she had to give her up for adoption, scared of the elders' (White lighter committee) disapproval.
Angry that they were never told, the two sisters eventually forgave their mother for her secret and learnt that through Paige, they could now recreate The Charmed Ones. Adamant at first, they fulfilled their duty and once again, created the most powerful witches in the world.
This is the storyline behind the very popular television series, that has gathered millions of fans across the globe, young and old alike. Charmed is anticipating, interesting, humourous and educational. With its new stories every week, it grips the viewers and makes them feel every emotion possible, from sadness to happiness, turning tears into laughter. Made in 1998, Charmed fans will be expecting many more enjoyable years to come.
